Since there's no clear cut line between Avondale and Riverside, many of the Jacksonville locals refer to this area as the Riverside-Avondale district. Often, Avondale is considered a sub-district of Riverside, as well. Even though this is all true, Avondale and Riverside are separate areas and Avondale is listed separately in the National Register of Historic Places.
Located between St. Jon's Avenue and close to Roosevelt Boulevard, Avondale is found on the Westside of Jacksonville. The neighborhood is most known for The Shoppes of Avondale, which is a collection of eclectic shops and excellent restaurants. You can find all types of places here, such as upscale boutiques and a hookah lounge.
Affordable apartments are found throughout Avondale, but the majority of the homes are bungalow style or historic home. Some mansions are found here, as well, but most of the neighborhood is middle-income housing.
Known as the cultural heart of the city, Riverside is one of the most popular places for festivals, events and museums. It was called "the closest thing to Greenwich Village in Florida," by Financial Times and is home to the Five Points commercial district. This area includes many great bars, restaurants and shops with plenty of independent merchants throughout.
The Riverside Art Market is a big part of the area, as well. This is the best farmers market in the area and runs from March to December every year. You will find all types of things here and it's more than just a farmers market. With live music, arts, crafts, local food and street performers, this is the place to be on Saturdays.
Some of the notable places and events in Riverside include:
River City Pride Festival
The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens
Garden Club of Jacksonville
These are just a few of the places and events found in this area of Jacksonville.
If you're relocating to the city, the Riverside and Avondale areas are perfect for your new home. Riverside is very walkable and both of these areas include some of the best shopping found throughout the city.
