Neighborhood Spotlight: San Marco

As one of the oldest neighborhoods in Jacksonville, San Marcos is a great choice for many relocating to the area. It dates back to the 1800s and is found south of Downtown Jacksonville. This area used to be just a farming community and it was originally named Oklahoma.

After the construction of many Mediterranean-style buildings, the area's name became San Marcos. Many of these original buildings are still standing and the name was taken from the area in Venice known by the same name.

At the center of the area, San Marcos Square is found with plenty of great restaurants, a small park and a number of unique boutiques and shops. Some of the shops in the area are very well-known, along with many of the restaurants winning awards every year. The San Marco Bookstore is very popular, along with Grotto, which is a wine bar. Edward's is a very popular cigar shop found in the area and Square One is a hot dance club.

You will also find the San Marco Theatre in the square, which is a very popular historic theatre.

Along with the San Marco Square, residents enjoy plenty of other shopping areas in the eastern part of the area. This area is still being developed, but many new stores are opening every month


If you prefer a neighborhood that's considered very walkable, San Marcos is a great choice. This neighborhood is known as one of the most walkable in the area and gave it an overall score of 76. Other than Downtown, San Marcos is the most walkable in Jacksonville.

The homes found here provide a very interesting mix with many affordable bungalows, luxury homes and many other styles throughout the area. Many of the homes are single-family, while a large 160 unit condominium building is under construction, as well.

Residents can enjoy all that Jacksonville offers and transportation is very easy. The JTA Skyway station is the perfect way to get to and from downtown and there's a station in San Marco. If you're planning to move to the Jacksonville area, this neighborhood may be the perfect choice.
